CAFL Round 2

On Saturday Round 2 of the 2014 CAFL Season took place at Victoria Park in Glasgow’s north. This would e the second fixture for defending Premiers the TIGERS and this week’s opponent was the 2012 Premiers the CARDS in their first outing for 2014. The TIGERS were without goal sneak Kirsty Gray while the CARDS were missing midfielder Ross Thomson and Ruckman Darren Chadwick.

First Quarter
The game started with a centre clearance from TIGERS star midfielder Andy Dubojski his entry into the forward line was repelled twice by the combined efforts of new CARDS Andy McAllister , Blair Elliott and their Captain Robert ‘Magic’ McKinlay before once again falling to Dubojski who at the third attempt found Mark Cadman on the lead, Cadman went back and shot for Goal with his effort spraying off the side of his boot and out of bounds for an opposition free kick. From the resulting free kick McAllister of the CARDS found Teammate Elliott who was gang tackled by Dubojski and Alex Young resulting in a free kick to the latter 20 metres from goal. Again the Tigers accuracy was again found wanting with only a behind resulting for the first score of the match. After a failed exit again from the CARDS the ball fell in the lap of TIGER Spearhead Danny Collett who calmly went back and slotted the first goal of the game. The Tigers went forward again from the centre but good work from McAllister, Elliott and Michael Douglas saw the danger cleared to centre wing. Some good chasing work from the Tigers saw a Cadman handpass release Tiger Co-Captain Derek Smith who steadied and put through the Tigers second goal at the 6 minute mark of the first quarter. This immediately brought a response from the Cards and good clearance work by Hazel Stevenson released Steve Thompson who snapped the Cards opening goal around his body with a tumbling effort that just went the required distance. After some resolute defending from both sides we had to wait until the eleven minute mark for the next goal when a long ball into the forward line was hacked forward by Cadman for Collett to run onto a prod home for his second and the Tigers third. Again the Tigers surged forward and after a good interchange between Nicky Thomson and Collett it was Graham Wilson who had an attempt narrowly missing from a very tight angle to finish the scoring for the quarter.

Second Quarter
The second quarter started with both teams moving the ball between their half forward and half back lines. It was the Tigers who registered on the Scoreboard when a shot from Alex Young was rushed through for a behind. They were to add a goal to their tally 1 minute later a Dubojski pass found Collett on the lead he wheeled around and centred a pass to Bryan Martin who collected and scored the goal. The Tigers were making all the running and they managed to rush another behind to their total through the pressure they had created. Hazel Stevenson and Michael Douglas were playing well for the Cards in defence repelling wave after wave of Tiger attacks. The Cards couldn’t hold out a quick break from the Tigers that found its way to the ever reliable Dubojski who scored a goal from the goalsquare. From the resulting ball up a Thompson pass found Paul Sweeney who marked went back and slotted the Cards second goal of the game. The reply stung the Tigers into action and a long ball and good work from Nicky Thomson gave Cadman a chance , he sprayed his shot across the face of goal for a behind. He made amends 30 seconds later when again good work from Nicky Thomson and Alex Young forced the ball to spill out into the path of Cadman , this time he made no mistake and scored the goal.

CAFL Round 2

Third Quarter
The third quarter started in similar fashion to the first 2, a Dubojski clearance for the Tigers led to a passage of play involving Bryan Martin and Young culminating in a goal for Cadman. The Tigers were heaping on the pressure now and the ball remained locked in their forward half till the 4 minute mark when from a ball up in the left forward pocket the ball fell to Del Smith with his resultant shot just bouncing the wrong side of the goal post. The resulting clearance from the Cards was scrappy and led to a free kick for Wilson of the Tigers , his long bomb into the forward line was collected by Cadman who in turn handpassed to Co-Captain David Smith for a well worked goal. The Tigers were controlling the play by now and a free kick in the centre to Del Smith saw a great pass to Alex Young and another close range goal to the Tigers. After more prolonged pressure at the city end of the ground that the Tigers were kicking too the next score came from Martin, again collecting long pass and having a shot that went just wide for a behind. The Cards were finding it increasingly difficult to get out of their defensive zone under constant Tiger pressure chances for Wilson and Cadman only led to behinds for the Tigers though. The quarter petered out without any more scores and both teams looking tired in heavy conditions and looking forward to the halftime break.

Fourth Quarter
The Tigers were in no mood to ease up after the break and with just over one and a half minutes gone in the third quarter they extended their lead even more. A good pass from Dubojski found Collett on the lead, he quickly played on and passed to the running Martin who calmly kicked a goal on the run from 20 metres out. The Cards settled and retained the ball well for the next 4 minutes to steady themselves, their Captain Magic McKinlay was instrumental along with Steve Thompson and Rookie player Andy McAllister. Against the run of play though the Tigers broke from the defensive half and again it was their speed that would make the Cards pay , good work between Dave Smith, Dubojski and Cadman saw Dubojski with the simplest of chances to prod home from inches out. The Cards burst out of the centre from the ball up and good work from Blair Elliott and Leesa Rushton saw the ball spill out and Steve Thompson receive a free kick for kicking in danger which he duly converted into a goal for the Cards. Thompson found himself with another chance to score a minute later after another free kick and a 25 metre penalty put him well within scoring range, unfortunately his shot just missed and went through for a behind. It wasn’t long before Thompson redeemed himself after locking the ball in their forward line the Cards worked the ball to Thompson again who turned and snapped a goal from the right forward pocket to reduce the deficit. The Cards had found a bit of confidence and run that had been missing , short passing and run on the far wing gave Thompson 2 more chances in a quarter where he had become the dominant player on the park, unfortunately he could only register behinds with both of them.
